Rights group: 4 Tibetans self-immolate in 24 hours

BEIJING (AP) — A London-based rights group says four Tibetans set fire to themselves in the past 24 hours to protest Chinese rule over the Himalayan region. It says this includes the first documented case of a triple self-immolation.

Free Tibet says three Tibetan monks aged 15 and 16 set themselves on fire Wednesday afternoon outside a police office in southwest Sichuan province.

Then in the evening a 23-year-old Tibetan nomadic woman self-immolated in western Qinghai province.

The group says it's the largest number of confirmed self-immolations in any one day.

Free Tibet director Stephanie Brigden say the group expects Tibetan protests to escalate as the Chinese Communist Party's congress starts Thursday.

Dozens of ethnic Tibetans have self-immolated since March 2011.
